These changes are significant for anybody seeking for an Australian visa this year.

Australia Immigration and Visa Rule Changes 2023:

  • Extension of post-study employment rights for overseas graduates by two years, effective July 1, 2023: The Australian government will provide an extension of two years for post-study work rights to qualifying graduates of international higher education institutions. Moreover, the maximum number of hours that overseas students may work while studying in Australia will be increased from the existing 40 to 48 per fortnight, giving them even more freedom to mix work and study.
  • Swift processing of visas for healthcare and teaching professionals: The Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL), which was used by the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to rank skilled visa applications, has been withdrawn. According to the DHA, applications for skilled visas are handled in accordance with Ministerial Directive No. 100’s list of government policy goals. As a result, visa applications from teachers and healthcare professionals will now be handled first.
  • NSW– Australia has lowered the requirements for nominations for subclass 190 visas: Due to the enhanced availability of the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) by DHA, Australia, New South Wales (NSW) Immigration has eliminated the earlier accessible points scores and work experience rules for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190).
  • More than 8,000 places have been allocated for nominations in South Australia: The final South Australian (SA) nomination allocation levels for 2022–23 have been confirmed by the Australian government. In the years 2022–2023, the SA will provide state nomination to around 8,000 candidates. These nominations for the Subclass 190, Subclass 491, and Subclass 188 visas have been sent to the SA.
  • Australian temporary visa applicants must now meet the following criteria: The rules for those applying for temporary visas in Australia have been changed by the Australian government. The government has primarily updated the need for temporary visa applicants in Australia to undergo a medical check.
  • Modifications to the TRA’s MSA: A few significant adjustments to the rules for the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) programme have been made, according to Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). For all new MSA applications submitted starting on October 4, 2022, these updated guidelines will reflect modifications made to the employment criteria.
  • Major modifications to skilled migration: In the most recent Jobs and Skills Conference, which was place in the beginning of September 2022, Australia made important adjustments regarding skilled migration.

These changes include:

  • The number of spots available for permanent skilled migration in 2022–2023 has increased from 160,000 to 195,000.
  • As a consequence, 34,000 locations were added to the regions for this year, which is 9,000 more than was previously announced.
  • Putting in place a significant increase for state and territory sponsored visas, going from 11,000 to 31,000 from the previous year.
  • Restrictions on Covid-19 removal: On July 6, 2022, Australia lifted all limitations on Covid-19. It suggests that visitors to Australia are no longer need to submit a Digital Passenger Declaration (DPD) indicating whether they have received the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Federal and State governments are accepting applications: Applications are being accepted by the federal and state governments. Australia’s federal and nearly all of its state governments are now accepting applications from those seeking immigration from abroad.
  • Beginning on July 1st is Australia’s new immigration programme year: Every year on July 1st, Australia’s migration programme begins a new year. Australia aims to welcome 160,000 new immigrants in 2022 through the Skills, Family, and Special Eligibility Streams.
  • Holders of subclass 482 Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visas: The Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) subclass 186 visa is now open to Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) subclass 482 visa holders in the short-term stream. These rules also apply to those with subclass 457 Temporary Work (Skilled) visas who work in a position on the Short-term Skilled Occupations List (STSOL).
  • Age exclusion for holders of subclass 457 visas: If they apply through the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) subclass 186 visa, holders of eligible historical subclass 457 visas may be granted an age exemption.
  • Holders of Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visas, subclass 482 (Short-term stream): Former TSS visa holders who met the requirements and had prior work-related experience in Australia during the COVID-19 epidemic are now able to do so while still on Australian soil.
  • Visa Fee Revised from 1st July: For the majority of skilled, visit, and sponsored visa categories, Australia has changed the visa cost. The new visa cost will be in place starting on July 1, 2022.
